The Hanging Obelisk at the GEM

A Unique Landmark Welcoming the World

As you arrive at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), one extraordinary monument immediately captures your attention—the Hanging Obelisk of King Ramses II. Standing proudly in front of the main entrance, this remarkable monument is the first sight to welcome visitors to one of the greatest museums in the world.

King Ramses II built more than ten obelisks in the ancient city of Tanis (San El-Hagar) in the eastern Nile Delta. This obelisk, measuring about 16 meters in height, is the tallest obelisk ever erected in Tanis. Its four sides are beautifully carved with the royal titles of Ramses II, including his Horus name, coronation name, and birth name, reflecting the power and glory of one of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs.

What makes this monument truly exceptional is its innovative modern design. Weighing approximately 87 tons, the obelisk is raised on a special platform supported by four massive columns, making it the first hanging obelisk in the world. This unique display allows visitors to see the royal cartouches carved on the bottom of the obelisk, a rare detail that cannot be viewed on traditional standing obelisks.

The obelisk stands in a vast open plaza covering around 30,000 square meters, directly in front of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Made of granite, it measures 15.5 meters high, with a width of 174 cm and a base length of 184 cm. The site offering visitors the perfect opportunity to admire this masterpiece and capture unforgettable photos.

Visiting the Hanging Obelisk is more than seeing an ancient monument—it is a journey through Egypt’s past and present, where ancient craftsmanship meets modern engineering. It is a must-see highlight for every traveler visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum and an unforgettable start to your exploration of Egypt’s timeless heritage.
