Over time, as public burial spaces became increasingly scarce, especially during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, the site evolved into a public necropolis and remained in use until the late 4th century.

Carved deep into the bedrock, the catacombs consist of three underground levels, descending into a fascinating labyrinth of corridors and chambers.
