The Dream Stela of Thutmose IV

A Sacred Vision at the Feet of the Great Sphinx

Standing between the paws of the Great Sphinx of Giza, the Dream Stela of King Thutmose IV is one of the most fascinating monuments of Egypt’s New Kingdom. Carved from pink granite, the stela measures approximately 144 cm in height, 70 cm in width, and 40 cm in thickness, and dates to the 18th Dynasty. It was commissioned by King Thutmose IV (c. 1411–1397 BC) to commemorate a divine dream that changed the course of his destiny.

Before ascending the throne, Thutmose IV was a young prince during the New Kingdom. While hunting on the Giza Plateau, he grew tired and rested in the shade of the Sphinx, which at that time was almost completely buried under desert sand, with only its head visible. As the prince fell asleep, he dreamed that the Sphinx appeared to him, promising that he would become king of Egypt if he removed the sand covering the sacred monument.

After becoming king around 1401 BC, Thutmose IV ordered the excavation and restoration of the Sphinx. During the first year of his reign, he placed the Dream Stela between the Sphinx’s forepaws to record this vision in stone—nearly 1,300 years after the Sphinx itself was originally carved, traditionally dated to the reign of King Khufu (c. 2600–2700 BC).

Many scholars believe the Dream Stela also served as a form of political propaganda, intended to legitimize Thutmose IV’s rule by presenting his kingship as divinely ordained. By linking his accession to the will of the gods, the young king reinforced his authority and sacred status before the Egyptian people.

The stela features finely carved reliefs showing Thutmose IV wearing the Blue Crown, holding an Asiatic captive and a dagger, accompanied by hieroglyphic inscriptions praising the king as “the good god, giver of life like Ra forever.” The Dream Stela was rediscovered in August 2001 by a Japanese archaeological mission working in the Giza area, bringing renewed attention to this remarkable monument.

✨ The Dream Stela is more than an inscription—it is a powerful story of destiny, divine favor, and royal legitimacy, making it an essential highlight for visitors exploring the Great Sphinx with NARMER TOURS.
