The Pyramid of Menkaure

The Smallest Pyramid with a Powerful Legacy on the Giza Plateau

The Pyramid of King Menkaure (c. 2532–2503 BC) completes the iconic trio of pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Menkaure, the son of King Khafre and grandson of King Khufu, built the third and smallest pyramid of Giza. Despite its modest size, with an original height of about 65 meters, the pyramid stands as a remarkable testament to innovation and royal ambition.

The reduced scale of Menkaure’s pyramid was influenced by several factors, including the limited remaining space on the plateau and the choice of building materials. Unlike his predecessors, who used limestone casing stones, Menkaure chose granite imported from Aswan, more than 800 kilometers south of Giza. This hard and heavy stone made transportation and construction far more challenging. Only the lower quarter of the pyramid was clad in granite, while the upper sections were covered with limestone.

Adjacent to the pyramid are three smaller subsidiary pyramids, believed to have been built for the queens of Menkaure’s reign. Although the exact location of the king’s pyramid town has not yet been discovered, it is widely thought that the largest of these three pyramids belonged to the principal queen.

King Menkaure died before his pyramid complex was fully completed. Many of the granite casing blocks were left unpolished, and while the mortuary temple and valley temple were originally planned to be built of limestone and granite, they were ultimately completed using mudbrick. Despite these limitations, the cult of Menkaure continued for nearly 300 years after his death, reflecting the lasting respect and reverence he commanded.

✨ Though smaller in size, the Pyramid of Menkaure tells a powerful story of craftsmanship, devotion, and royal legacy—an essential stop on any journey with NARMER TOURS across the timeless Giza Plateau.
