The Citadel of Saladin
A Timeless Fortress Overlooking Islamic Cairo
Standing proudly atop the Mokattam Hills, the Citadel of Saladin is one of the most iconic landmarks of Islamic Cairo and a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Thanks to its strategic location, the Citadel offers breathtaking panoramic views over Cairo’s historic skyline, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking history, culture, and unforgettable scenery.
Construction of the Citadel began in 1176 AD under the leadership of Sultan Salah al-Din (Saladin), who chose this elevated site—once known as Qubbat al-Hawa—to serve as a powerful defensive stronghold protecting Egypt’s Islamic capitals. Although Saladin did not live to see its completion, the fortress was finalized in 1207 AD by Sultan al-Kamil ibn al-Adil, who became the first ruler to reside within its walls. For centuries, the Citadel remained the seat of power in Egypt until Khedive Ismail moved the government headquarters to Abdeen Palace in the 19th century.
Throughout its long history, the Citadel witnessed pivotal events from the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods, extending through the era of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty and up to the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Over time, remarkable architectural additions enriched the complex, most notably the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Mosque of Al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, and the Mosque of Suleiman Pasha al-Khadim. The Citadel also houses several fascinating museums, including the Gawhara Palace Museum, the Police Museum, and the Military Museum.
